SAVE PASIR PUTIH BEACH
SANDAKAN: About 150 participants from the Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) Church Region 13 (Sandakan-Beluran) took part in the ‘Save Pasir Putih Beach’ campaign to clean Pasir Putih Beach here.
The programme was organised by the SDA Church for the third time and was graced by Pastor Ervin Karau from SDA Mission Sabah.
Pasir Putih Beach is the only recreational beach close to Sandakan Town but is not a popular destination amongst the locals due to its poor cleanliness condition.
Organising chairman Walter Ricky Palalun expressed hope that the Gotong Royong programme would bring out the beauty of the beach, and with its amazing view, he hoped the beach would become a popular tourists destination.
“The Pasir Putih Beach, located about six kilometres away from town, used to be known as ‘Sandy Plain’ and it was once a recreational spot for the locals, especially during the weekends.
“Some visitors would even travel far to visit the beach with friends and families as it is the only recreational beach in town,” Walter said.
He said the once beautiful and magnificent beach had now changed due to various factors that had polluted the beach, including a lack of awareness amongst the locals to keep the beach clean.
“Cooperation from all parties and individuals are welcome in a community service programme such as this. Keeping the beach clean is everyone’s responsibility, especially when Pasir Putih has such a huge potential to be a tourist attraction spot.
“Cleaning up the beach would also grab the attention of the locals and at the same time educate them about the importance of keeping our beach clean,” Walter added.
The programme was held in collaboration with the Sandakan Municipal Council.
